Dušan Borovčanin for USA Today: Expo 2027 Is a Historic Opportunity to Showcase a New Face of Serbia

16.05.2025
One of the most prominent American daily newspapers, USA Today, published an extensive article in its special supplement Business Focus about the upcoming Specialised Expo 2027, highlighting Belgrade as an emerging hub of innovation, cultural exchange, and educational collaboration. On this occasion, Dušan Borovčanin, CEO of Expo 2027 Belgrade – the company responsible for organizing and executing the exhibition – spoke to the prestigious publication.

“Expo 2027 is a historic opportunity. Most of the innovations that have changed everyday life for humanity were first introduced at International Exhibitions. But Expo 2027 is more than just an event. It's a chance to change Serbia’s image and open the door to millions of people around the world who know very little about our country,” Borovčanin emphasized in his interview with USA Today.

He reminded readers that Serbia has participated in International Exhibitions for more than 140 years, but this marks the first time the country has successfully bid to host one.

“Competing against four cities from the United States, Spain, Thailand, and Argentina, we proved that we have the knowledge, experience, and international standing necessary to organize such an event. We convinced the world that Serbia can meet the highest standards,” Borovčanin said. He added that the decisive edge came from the powerful thematic message: “Play for Humanity: Sport and Music for All”, which, he noted, reflects the universal power of play to unite people, inspire innovation, and foster collaboration.

In his conversation with the American outlet, Borovčanin also revealed that over 120 countries are expected to participate, including the United States, which will have one of the largest national pavilions.

“Having the U.S. present is extremely important to us. Now that we have direct flights between our two countries, new opportunities are opening for American visitors to come to Serbia – not only during the Expo but afterward as well,” said the CEO of Expo 2027 Belgrade.

The USA Today article also notes that Expo 2027 will take place on a 25-hectare site near Belgrade's airport and city center.

“This will be a completely new urban district, featuring road, rail, and communications infrastructure, along with key buildings such as the National Stadium, a new fairgrounds complex – set to be the most modern in Europe – residential units, museums, galleries, and schools. Every building is designed with a post-Expo purpose in mind, as our goal is to ensure lasting economic, social, and environmental sustainability,” Borovčanin explained.

In the interview, Borovčanin reminded the American audience of the significance of Expo events and invited readers to plan their trip to Serbia in 2027, when Belgrade will host the first Expo of its kind in this part of the world.
