First Steps Toward Big Victories: Why the Children’s Marathon Matters

10.05.2025
The Children’s Marathon is much more than a sports event – it symbolizes the beginning of healthy habits, the development of discipline, and the cultivation of a love for sport among the youngest. By participating in the marathon, children engage in fun physical activity, learn the importance of persistence and teamwork, and develop a sense of achievement that will guide them throughout their lives.

PhD Snežana Vuković, Assistant Minister of Education in the Ministry of Education for the prevention of violence and inclusion of vulnerable groups in education, emphasizes the significance of such events:

“Not only are play and sport crucial for the development of social and cognitive abilities, but they are also essential for a child’s physical health. Through these activities, children learn important physical health skills, such as balance, coordination, and agility. That’s why they need to participate as much as possible, especially in nature. Play is the primary mechanism for stimulating motor skills in children, and their development is vital for the overall growth and development of every child.”

The Children’s Marathon perfectly combines play and physical activity, reminding us of the importance of allowing children to grow through movement and togetherness. This idea aligns seamlessly with the Expo 2027 Belgrade theme, “Play for Humanity: Sport and Music for All,” which celebrates play as a universal language of connection and development, as well as a driving force for a healthier and more humane society. This race for the youngest is a perfect example of how, through play and sport, we can shape generations that will nurture unity, inclusivity, and both physical and mental well-being.

“Inclusion is a remarkable achievement of humanity that brings children together, regardless of their differences, allowing each child to fulfill their need for companionship, play, learning, and the desire to be loved and accepted,” adds PhD Vuković.

By participating in marathons and similar events, the youngest not only develop healthy life habits but also become part of a broader narrative about the importance of play for the future of society. In this way, through small steps and big smiles, children today are building a world where play, sport, and health rightfully occupy their place.
