Japan officially confirms participation in EXPO 2027 Belgrade: Tradition, Innovation, and Culture in the service of Play for Humanity
Japan has officially confirmed its participation in the specialized Expo 2027 Belgrade as one of 127 countries that will take part in this global event of innovation, culture, and creativity, to be held from 15 May to 15 August 2027 in the Serbian capital. The Land of the Rising Sun will present its vision of the theme “Play for Humanity: Sport and Music for All” through a unique fusion of tradition, art, technology, play, and sport.
Diplomatic relations between Serbia and Japan date back to 1882, when King Milan Obrenović sent a letter to Emperor Meiji informing him of his coronation, thus initiating official correspondence between the two countries. Today, the two states maintain traditionally good and friendly relations with a shared interest in strengthening political dialogue and cooperation in numerous fields. Particularly important is the material and technical assistance Japan donates to Serbia in the areas of healthcare, education, and public transportation.
“With great pleasure, we welcomed the news that a country of remarkable tradition, innovation, and commitment to the common good will be part of our global game for humanity. Japan will present at EXPO 2027 in Belgrade a uniquely blended energy of sport, the rhythm of music, and its deeply rooted philosophy of harmony and community. We are confident that Japan’s participation will be highly noteworthy, just as Serbia left a strong impression at the World Expo in Osaka this year,” said Danilo Jerinić, Director of EXPO 2027 ltd. Belgrade, emphasizing that the Expo in Osaka was an important opportunity for Serbia to gain valuable experience in organizing major international events.
Japan is a country of rich history, diverse customs, and fascinating contrasts. This country produced 31 Nobel Prize laureates, and its near-universal literacy is the result of a strong dedication to education and a unique school system in which students, together with their teachers, take responsibility for maintaining cleanliness and order in schools, learning responsibility and cooperation. Great importance is placed on modesty and practicality. It is no coincidence that Japan grows square watermelons for easier storage or that Shinkansen high-speed trains follow their schedules to the minute. The country has over 100 active volcanoes, among which the magnificent Mount Fuji stands out as a national symbol under UNESCO protection.
As an island nation that was isolated from the rest of the world for centuries, Japan has managed to develop a distinctive culture while harmoniously incorporating influences from abroad. Synonymous with samurai, geishas, cherry blossoms, origami, and haiku poetry, today Japan is globally recognized for anime, manga, robotics, advanced technologies, and sumo wrestling. Alongside its unique pop culture, traditional music remains highly cherished. Three instruments particularly represent Japanese musical heritage: the shamisen, a three-string instrument; the shakuhachi, a bamboo flute; and the koto, one of the oldest Japanese string instruments.
Through a blend of its rich tradition, contemporary creativity, and exceptional sporting spirit, Japan will present at EXPO 2027 Belgrade an identity that inspires the world and invites visitors to discover the unique rhythm of the Land of the Rising Sun.
