"Since the time of Mihajlo Pupin and his famous coils displayed at the St. Louis World’s Expo in 1904, Serbia has shown the world that it is a country of ideas that connect people, inspire progress, and push the boundaries of what is possible." highlighted Dejan Tomašević, Advisor to the Director of EXPO 2027 ltd, at the ceremonial event in Idvor commemorating the 171st anniversary of the birth of the great Serbian scientist and humanist Mihajlo Pupin.
In Pupin’s hometown, a place that reflects the spirit of science, innovation, and creativity, Tomašević presented Serbia’s rich tradition of participation in World’s Expos through the innovations of its scientists, from Paris and St. Louis to the present day. “The spirit of progress that drove Pupin, Tesla, and Alas continues to thrive today with the same intensity through EXPO 2027 Belgrade-the largest international event in our country’s history and the first time a country in our region will host a specialized exhibition,” he emphasized at the event.
He also highlighted that alongside Pupin, Serbian innovation at World’s Expos was represented by other great minds such as Nikola Tesla, who in 1893 showcased the alternating current system in Chicago, and Mihailo Petrović Alas, who received an Expo medal at the 1900 Paris World’s Fair for his hydro integrator, an analog computer marking the beginnings of cybernetics. The achievements of these Serbian great figures demonstrate how international exhibitions have historically shaped the world, while also serving as a perfect invitation for young innovators, researchers, and creators to take part in EXPO 2027 Belgrade, to present Serbian intelligence, imagination, and ideas for the future under the spotlight of a global stage, Tomašević concluded.
From May 15 to August 15, 2027, over the course of 93 days, Belgrade will host more than 120 countries, dozens of international organizations, leading global companies, and over four million visitors.
