The Islamic Republic of Iran has officially confirmed its participation in Expo 2027 Belgrade, the first International Exhibition in the Western Balkans, with the theme: “Play for Humanity: Sport and Music for All.

In the year when the Expo is held, Iran and Serbia will mark 90 years of diplomatic relations, which have traditionally been good. These ties are characterized by regular high-level contacts and mutual support in international organizations.

The Cultural Center of the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Belgrade is very active, frequently organizing poetry evenings, panel discussions, exhibitions, publishing magazines and books, hosting art competitions, and regularly holding the Iranian Film Festival. Serbian-Iranian relations were further strengthened earlier this year with the establishment of the Association of Friends of Iran in Serbia. Also, both countries look at the future to start a new phase of cooperation in the field of travel, tourism and relevant events. Expo 2027 will be a natural continuation of this fruitful collaboration.

“As true Serbian hosts, we are always delighted to welcome old friends with whom we’ve nurtured good relations for decades. Iran is one of those long-standing friends, which is why we were thrilled to receive the news that it will present the richness of its renowned and ancient culture in Belgrade in 2027 – a culture that has shaped the world. Their interpretation of play, music, and sport is sure to capture the attention of visitors, especially admirers of Iranian culture in our country.” said Dušan Borovčanin, CEO of Expo 2027 d.o.o. Belgrade.

Authentic Iranian games are deeply rooted in the culture, nature, and social customs of the Iranian people. Some of the most popular traditional games include Backgammon, alak dolak (a game with sticks), haftsang (involving small balls and stones), vasati (an Iranian version of dodgeball), and qāyem bāshak (the Iranian version of hide-and-seek). Each region in Iran has its own cultural identity, and the country abounds with diverse traditional dances. Azeri, Kurdish, Turkmen, Lori, Gilaki, and Bandari dances are just a few examples, often accompanied by instruments such as the tonbak (a traditional Iranian drum), the tar (a string instrument from the lute family), the sorna (a woodwind instrument), and the daff.

The most popular sports in Iran include Pahlevani and Zoorkhanei rituals, an ancient martial art listed by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage, as well as chovgan (a traditional team horseback game), horseback riding, archery, and wrestling, in which Iranian athletes have achieved great success. Perhaps the most well-known Iranian athlete today is Mehdi Taremi, a footballer for Inter Milan, this year’s UEFA Champions League finalist. Another legendary figure in Iranian football is the iconic Ali Daei, former national team captain and one of the greatest Asian footballers of all time.

Iran participated in the first World Expo that took place in London in 1851 and became a member of the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) in 2002. At Expo 2015 in Milan, Iran received the Silver Award for Pavilion Design.

Expo 2027 Belgrade will take place from May 15 to August 15, 2027, with participation from over 120 countries. The exhibition is expected to attract more than four million visitors over its 93-day duration.
