Switzerland is most commonly associated with the Alps, chocolate, precision watches, and banks. However, it offers much more than its classic symbols. Visitors to EXPO 2027 Belgrade will have the opportunity to explore lesser-known aspects of Swiss culture, sports, and music, as well as how this Alpine confederation seamlessly blends tradition with innovation.
One of the most fascinating elements of Swiss musical heritage is the Alphorn – a wooden wind instrument once used by shepherds in the mountains for communication, now a symbol of cultural heritage. Its powerful and melodic tone carries an almost mythical resonance. Another musical phenomenon originating from Switzerland is yodeling – a distinctive singing technique that relies on rapid shifts between deep and high-pitched tones. This technique is not only a part of tradition but also an expression of connection with nature and the community.
Switzerland is also known for its unique dances, often accompanied by the accordion, while among its interesting sound symbols are Alpine bells, which are not just tools for shepherds but also artistic creations with distinct tones.
Beyond music, Switzerland is a country of sports. The rivalry between Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer is just one link to Serbia, while its authentic sports are a true attraction. Schwingen, a type of wrestling traditionally practiced on sawdust, Hornussen – an unusual blend of baseball and golf, and Steinstossen – the throwing of stones weighing up to 83.5 kg, are just some of the sports unique to this Alpine nation.
What fewer people may know is that Switzerland is a pioneer in combining sports and technology. The Zurich University of the Arts and Swiss programmers developed the mobile game "Plunder Planet," which adjusts difficulty levels based on the player's heart rate, encouraging physical activity through entertainment. Innovations like this could be showcased in Belgrade as part of EXPO 2027.
In addition, we must not forget the spirit of modern music festivals. Switzerland is home to one of the world's largest techno parties – the famous Street Parade in Zurich. Every year, the northern shore of Lake Zurich becomes the epicentre of electronic music, bringing together hundreds of thousands of people from around the world. This event, which began as a manifestation for love, peace, and freedom, is now one of the most renowned musical spectacles on the planet.
Switzerland is not just chocolate, watches, and the Alps – it is a country of innovation, culture, and sports, where tradition and the future come together. At EXPO 2027 in Belgrade, visitors will be able to discover its hidden sides, exploring the richness of sounds, movements, and ideas that shape this unique nation.
