On May 2nd, 140 years ago, the Kingdom of Serbia debuted at the Antwerp International Exposition in 1885. This marked the beginning of a new chapter in the development of international relations, the strengthening of cultural diplomacy, and the promotion of its innovative spirit. Since then, Serbia's participation in international exhibitions – both those under the auspices of the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) and others – has formed an unbroken series of distinguished appearances showcasing Serbian science, art, crafts, industrial potential, and rich cultural and historical heritage.
Over the decades, international exhibitions have provided a platform for Serbia’s voice to be heard through the work and ideas of its brightest minds. Nikola Tesla forever changed the world with his presence and inventions at several World Expos, including Paris in 1889 and Chicago in 1893, where he introduced the alternating current system, the principles of electric power transmission and pavilion lighting, the teleautomaton (a radio-controlled boat), and the Tesla coil. Artists like Paja Jovanović brought international recognition to Serbian visual arts, while our renowned scientists, musicians, innovators, architects, and artisans continued to shape the image of Serbia as a land of ideas, skill, and cultural richness.
Officials from the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) also agree that Serbia and its pavilions have always embodied innovation and creativity at international exhibitions.
“Serbia’s long-standing engagement in Expos is a testament to the innovation, creativity, and forward-looking spirit of its people. Through its diverse and meaningful contributions to these global events, Serbia continues to share its unique perspectives and talents with the world, enriching the spirit of cooperation that lies at the heart of Expos. We look forward to seeing this legacy continue with Expo 2027 Belgrade”, said Dimitri S. Kerkentzes, Secretary General of the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE).
Today, as we prepare to host Expo 2027 in Belgrade – the largest event in Serbia’s history and the first international exhibition in the Western Balkans – this anniversary highlights our ongoing commitment to the exchange of knowledge, creativity, and innovative ideas with the world. Serbia has not only proudly participated in global events but has also actively contributed to the global dialogue on human progress, and will continue to do so in the years ahead.
“Commemorating 140 years of Serbia’s participation in international exhibitions is not only a reason for pride but a strong reminder of our enduring dedication to sharing knowledge, art, and innovation with the world. Serbia has, through generations, presented exceptional people, ideas, and achievements across all areas of life. Expo 2027 Belgrade is a natural continuation of this tradition and a chance to showcase our full potential today, as we bravely look to the future. Our Expo will be a place where play – symbolizing freedom, creativity, and connection – comes alive and drives new achievements for all humanity,” said Dušan Borovčanin, CEO of Expo 2027 Belgrade.
Serbia is not just a part of the history of international exhibitions – it is also an active co-creator, a leader in innovation and creativity, and a reliable partner in addressing global challenges, emphasized Ana Ilić, head of the national platform Serbia Creates, which led Serbia’s participation at Expo 2020 Dubai.
"By participating in international exhibitions, we have enhanced Serbia’s image, positioning ourselves as a modern and creative country. We have strengthened our business network and partnerships with participating countries, while also contributing to global innovation. Exhibitions are an ideal opportunity to showcase the best we have to offer and to create new chances for our economy and society. That’s why Serbia’s largest participation to date – at the World Expo in Dubai in 2020 – was seen as an investment in our future. We established over 10,000 business contacts, and more than 1,200 Serbian entrepreneurs presented themselves to global partners. We showcased numerous innovations that impressed the world and set new standards for Serbia’s international representation. This helped pave the way for an even more important role – from Expo participant to host – as we prepare to welcome the world to Belgrade in 2027. This confirms Serbia’s growing importance on the global stage, and we are excited to see our Expo story continue," concludes Ana Ilić.
In the spirit of this proud anniversary, Expo 2027 Belgrade will be a brilliant homage to this tradition – a bridge between past and future, a place where innovations from over 120 countries meet inspiration, play, knowledge, art, and science.
