Romance on the World Stage: Love Stories from International Exhibitions

14.02.2025
International Exhibitions – gatherings of cultures, technologies, and innovations – have often served as the backdrop for romantic tales filled with love and shared dreams. These global events, which bring together people from all corners of the world, offer unique opportunities to form connections that go far beyond casual meetings – and, in many cases, lead to lasting love.

While Expos are places where the world is reshaped through science and technology, they also remind us that it is emotion that truly sets these events apart. From proposals under the lights of futuristic pavilions to chance encounters that blossom into lifelong partnerships, the Expo is not only a showcase of the future, but also a witness to love that knows no borders.

One of the most talked-about stories from Expo 2020 Dubai went viral worldwide. On Valentine’s Day in 2021, Chirag Lakhiani got down on one knee and proposed to his beloved Kritika Ramchandani at the Expo site. Surrounded by family, friends, and a romantic Bollywood-inspired soundtrack, the moment captured hearts across the globe. But this was far from the only proposal during the event. The official Expo 2020 pages even featured a video of another equally emotional engagement that took place on-site.

While some love stories were sealed during the Dubai exhibition, others began behind the scenes. Austeja from Lithuania and Cristian from Italy met while working together on preparations for Expo 2020. For them, the event was more than a celebration of architecture and innovation – it was the start of a love story that would become part of its legacy.

At the 1974 Specialised Expo in Spokane, Washington, Gail and Mike Sweeney met while working at the event. Their relationship, which began during the Expo, evolved into a lifelong partnership that was widely featured in the media last year.

Some fell in love with each other at the Expo – others fell in love with the event itself. Take the German Steube family, for example. Enchanted by the scale and spirit of Expo 2010 in Shanghai, they decided to turn their experience into a book. Their “love story” with the Expo culminated in an impressive photo monograph titled The Unbeatable, capturing the architecture, emotion, and people who formed the heart of that world exposition.

As the world looks ahead to Expo 2027, one can only imagine the new love stories that will unfold during the upcoming Specialised Expo in Belgrade. Will fateful encounters take place beneath futuristic structures? Will the spirit of Serbia’s capital inspire someone to say “Yes”? Perhaps another viral love story will circle the globe – born from the heart of the Balkans and set against the global stage of innovation and unity.
