Expo 2027: From the Chessboard to the World - A Game That Connects People, Ideas and Cultures

On the occasion of World Chess Day, observed on 20 July, attention was drawn to the connection between chess and the theme of Specialised Expo 2027 Belgrade, "Play for Humanity: Sport and Music for All." As a sport, intellectual discipline and universal language, chess promotes strategic thinking, fair play, patience and dialogue, and will have a special place in the sports programme during the 93 days of Expo 2027 through tournaments and accompanying activities. "Chess is much more than a game. Through chess, children and young people develop concentration, patience, strategic thinking and responsibility for their own decisions. These are values that prepare them for all the challenges they will face in life," said Andrija Jorgić, President of the Chess Federation of Serbia.

The Chess Federation of Serbia announced a unique programme with the ambition of setting a Guinness World Record, during which chess will be played continuously, 24 hours a day, throughout all 93 days of Expo. Visitors will be able to sit at a chessboard and make at least one move, while online matches, panels, training sessions and lectures will enable those unable to come to Belgrade to participate as well. As Jorgić noted, the goal is to send millions of positive messages around the world from Expo 2027 and demonstrate the power of play to connect people and encourage cooperation, understanding and progress.
