Serbia at the Commemoration of the 20th Anniversary of Expo 2005 Aichi: Inspiration for Expo 2027 Belgrade

In Nagoya, Japan, the 20th anniversary of Expo 2005 Aichi was solemnly marked - an event that brought together millions of visitors and showed the world how ideas and innovations can shape the future. Aichi is remembered for introducing hydrogen cars, robotic guides, and virtual reality to the wider public for the first time at a mega-event, and above all, for bringing the concept of “Nature’s Wisdom” to life through exhibition spaces designed in harmony with nature. In the year when Japan is also organising Expo 2025 Osaka, this jubilee has particular significance, reminding us of the lasting impact of Expos on the entire world.

Serbia and the upcoming Expo 2027 Belgrade were represented at this ceremony by Expo 2027 Advisor to the Director Dušan Borovčanin, who emphasised in his address:

“Expo 2005 Aichi showed that progress and sustainability are not opposing forces but partners in creating a better future. That is why this commemoration is not only about remembering one event, but also a reminder that every Expo leaves a lasting legacy for all of us. We look with deep respect at the path shaped by Aichi and Japan, grateful for the advice and experiences that guide us in our preparations. It was an honour to congratulate those whose vision and leadership inspire our own work and to invite them all to Belgrade in 2027, to the first Expo in the Western Balkans.”

During the ceremony, Toshio Nakamura, former Secretary General of Expo 2005 Aichi and, since 2018, Director of the Expo Museum, also addressed the audience:

“Expo 2005 Aichi, with the “Nature’s Wisdom” Theme, laid the foundation for combating global warming and building a sustainable society, becoming a model for all international exhibitions of the 21st century. On the occasion of the 20th anniversary, in cooperation with the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE), the first ‘X4 Innovation Award’ was formally established and presented. With this event, we strive to inspire new generations and ensure the continuous development of the Expo movement.”

To mark the 20th anniversary of Expo 2005 Aichi, a commemorative celebration was organised for several thousand visitors. Representatives of the international community had the opportunity to visit the park where Expo 2005 Aichi was held, which has preserved a thematic pavilion and museum as a memorial to the unity of more than 120 countries and 20 million visitors hosted by Expo 2005 Aichi. To this day, the park continues to attract large numbers of visitors from all over the world.

Expo, as a global manifestation, has always been more than an exhibition - it is a bridge between nations, generations, and visions of the future. That is why Expo 2027 Belgrade is an opportunity for Serbia to showcase to the world the best of its creativity and hospitality, while leaving a lasting legacy in infrastructure, sports, culture, and education. Over 93 days, from 15 May to 15 August 2027, Belgrade will be the meeting place for more than 120 countries, which will, through the “Play for Humanity: Sport and Music for All” Theme, demonstrate how togetherness and creativity can shape the world for generations to come.
