Serbia to Host World Environment Day 2027 as Part of Expo 2027 Belgrade

05.06.2026

On World Environment Day, celebrated today across the globe, Serbia officially assumed the role of host country for the 2027 observance during a ceremony held in Baku. The global event will be marked in Belgrade as part of the Specialised Exhibition Expo 2027 Belgrade. This milestone further confirms that the forthcoming Exhibition will serve as an important international platform for dialogue, knowledge-sharing, innovation, and solutions aimed at fostering a more responsible relationship with nature, resources and the future of communities worldwide.

World Environment Day is one of the most significant global observances dedicated to environmental protection, natural resource conservation and raising awareness of sustainable development. Its celebration in Belgrade in 2027 carries particular significance, as it will take place during Expo 2027 Belgrade, which will bring together participants and visitors from across the world.

Expo 2027 is being developed as a platform for connection, knowledge exchange, innovation, and forward-looking solutions, with the ambition of creating a meaningful legacy for the city, the community and the environment. Sustainability will, therefore, be an integral part of the Exhibition’s programme, organisation, and visitor experience throughout its 93-day duration.

Across the Expo site, a range of measures promoting responsible resource management, waste reduction, and environmental awareness will be implemented. Environmentally friendly packaging solutions will be used, food waste reduction initiatives will be promoted, and support for local producers and suppliers will contribute to reducing the event’s carbon footprint. Visitors will have the opportunity to experience first-hand how sustainable solutions operate in practice and how they can become part of everyday life.

Particular emphasis will be placed on education and public engagement. Through creative workshops, interactive experiences and activities designed for all generations, visitors will explore topics such as environmental protection, responsible resource use, the circular economy, and sustainable development. Waste collection and recycling systems will also be implemented throughout the Exhibition grounds, further encouraging responsible behaviour and strengthening environmental awareness.

World Environment Day 2027 will be celebrated as part of the thematic week “Play for a Sustainable Future”, dedicated to the relationship between people and nature, climate challenges, sustainable solutions, the circular economy and innovative approaches to environmental protection. Through play, creativity and experiential learning, visitors from around the world will have the opportunity to explore how individuals, communities, technology and innovation can work together to create more sustainable ways of living.

Hosting World Environment Day within the Expo 2027 Belgrade framework represents a valuable opportunity to showcase Serbia’s capital to the international community as a place of connection, knowledge and responsible solutions. At the same time, it offers Belgrade an opportunity to send a powerful message in 2027 - that major international events can unite the world around issues that matter to every society: the environment, natural resources, quality of life and the well-being of future generations.
