Algeria

Algeria

As Africa’s largest country and a historic crossroads of civilisations, Algeria offers an extraordinary wealth of cultural and natural heritage. Between the Mediterranean coastline, the Atlas Mountains and the vast expanses of the Sahara Desert lies a remarkable diversity of landscapes that have, for centuries, shaped the country’s way of life, traditions and national spirit.

Algeria’s rich history is reflected in its numerous UNESCO World Heritage sites, including Timgad, Djémila, Tipasa, the Kasbah of Algiers and the M'Zab Valley. These sites stand as testimony to the country’s layered heritage - from Numidian and Roman civilisations to Arab and Ottoman influences - which together form Algeria’s distinctive cultural identity.

Music occupies a central place in the Algerian culture. Raï, inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, is among the country’s most recognisable musical expressions. At the same time, genres such as chaabi, Andalusian, Kabyle, Gnawa and Targui music reflect the richness and diversity of Algeria’s soundscape.

Sport and traditional skills likewise hold an important place in society. Fantasia, the spectacular equestrian art form deeply rooted in history, symbolises strength, pride and community spirit. At the same time, major cultural events such as the International Festival of Timgad bring together artists and audiences from around the world.

Algerian gastronomy represents a vibrant fusion of flavours and traditions, from couscous and tagines to date- and honey-based sweets, reflecting the country’s Berber, Arab, African and Mediterranean heritage.

Today, Algeria is increasingly embracing innovation and the younger generation, whose energy is inspiring new forms of artistic expression and a contemporary approach to culture, connecting long-standing traditions with the digital age.

At Expo 2027 Belgrade, Algeria will present an immersive experience where music, sport, culture and innovation converge. Through the strength of its traditions and the dynamism of its younger generations, visitors will discover a country that lives in harmony between heritage and the future.

Algeria is not merely a destination - it is an experience filled with sound, colour and human connection, embodying in a unique way the spirit of the Expo theme: “Play for Humanity – Sport and Music for All.”
