Japan

Japan, a nation, where centuries‑old traditions coexist in remarkable harmony with cutting‑edge technology. Shaped by a long history of continuous development, Japanese culture is recognized worldwide for its authenticity and influence.

In Japan, tradition is not merely preserved as a legacy of the past—it remains alive within contemporary society, constantly reinterpreted and renewed.

Japan’s traditional culture embraces a rich diversity of customs, music, and performing arts. Bon Odori is among the most well‑known traditional dances, while the martial arts, known as budo, form an essential part of the nation’s cultural identity, emphasizing discipline, respect, and harmony. Musical heritages are embodied in instruments such as the shamisen, koto, and shakuhachi, which continue to be performed at festivals and modern stages. Alongside these traditions, Japan is globally recognized for its pop culture, including J‑POP, anime, and video games.

Modern Japan is also one of the world’s leading centers of innovation, technology, and creative industries. The country’s strong foundation in science and education is reflected in its many Nobel Prize recipients. At the same time, Japan’s natural beauty - from Mount Fuji to landscapes that change throughout the four seasons - adds another layer to its unique character, attracting visitors from around the world.

As the host of Expo 2025, Osaka, Kansai, Japan held under the theme “Designing Future Society for Our Lives,” Japan created a global platform where people from diverse cultures and backgrounds came together to engage in dialogue and co‑creation. Expo 2025, Osaka, Kansai connected the people and the world together beyond differences and generated a wealth of experience and knowledge to be carried forward into the future.

The Japan Pavilion at Expo 2027 Belgrade builds on the ideas and legacy cultivated at Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, sublimely weaving the visions of “Designing Future Society for Our Lives” and its legacy concept of “unity in diversity” into the universal theme of “Play”. Reinterpreting these ideas through the concept that to play is to connect, the pavilion is envisioned as a place of connection - linking Japan, Serbia, and the world, and bridging the past, present, and future.

Under the theme “Play and Connect, Together - Playful Spirit of Japan,” the Japan Pavilion showcases the multifaceted aspects of play that have been passed down through generations within Japanese society. Emphasizing real human interaction, the pavilion invites visitors to immerse themselves in play, engage with one another, and think together through its exhibits.

Through these shared and immersive experiences, the pavilion conveys a clear message: that a vibrant future - where life truly shines - lies beyond playing together and connecting. It also expresses how the playful spirit, rooted in openness and flexibility, has the power to transcend divisions and bring people together, realizing a world of “unity in diversity.”
